STAX MUSEUM OF AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC

Credo che Memphis sia una di quelle città realmente sottovalutate.

C’è una quantità enorme di cose da vedere – e non mi sto riferendo soltanto alla famosa e tanto osannata magione di Elvis – che ovviamente ho ben pensato di visitare!

Non so se lo sapevate già ma qui è stata fondata la STAX RECORD, l’etichetta discografica statunitense creata nel 1957 da Jim Stewart e la sorella Estelle Axton STewart/AXton = Stax) che ha lanciato la musica soul – non per niente il nome è sinonimo di Southern Soul Music.

Tutti i principali artisti di musica soul, gospel, funk e jazz erano sotto l’etichetta Stax, tanto per nominarvene qualcuno: Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, the Staple Singers, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, Booker T. & the MGs, Rufus and Carla Thomas e molti altri.

Dopo la bancarotta e la chiusura ufficiale dell’etichetta nel 1976, al suo posto ha aperto lo Stax Museum, un posto meraviglioso, un museo insomma che racchiude le origini, la crescita ed i successi del blues e della musica soul. Le numerose mostre interattive, l'accademia ed il workshop annesso dicono molto circa l'impegno costante che la comunità di Memphis riserva all’arte e soprattutto alla musica.

I think Memphis is an under-estimated city!

There are so many things and place to see – and I am not referring only to the Elvis Mainson – that I have obviously visitated!

Here was founded in 1957, Stax Records. This label was a major factor in the creation of the Southern soul and Memphis soul music styles, also releasing gospel, funk, jazz, and blues recordings. While Stax is renowned for its output of African-American music, the label was founded by two white businesspeople, Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton (STewart/AXton = Stax).

Stax Records main artists are Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, the Staple Singers, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, Booker T. & the MGs, Rufus and Carla Thomas and others, but also features other soul music labels such as Motown, Hi Records, Atlantic Records, and Muscle Shoals, and visitors are treated to vintage video footage of non-Stax artists such as Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Ann Peebles, The Jackson Five, Patti LaBelle, Parliament-Funkadelic, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, and others.

After the bankruptcy in 1976 in the former location of Stax Records were built the Stax Museum and the adjacent Stax Music Academy.

The Stax Museum is a replica of the Stax recording studio, the former Capitol Theatre, that's a 17,000 square feet (1,600 m2) museum with more than 2,000 videos, films, photographs, original instruments,stage costumes, interactive exhibits, and other items of memorabilia.

So the Stax Museum is one of most interesting of museums in the world dedicated to soul music…you have to visit it!
